Project realized revisiting the graphic design of the famous novel "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley through the use of layout, typography and images. All the illustrations in the book are made with the contour line drawing technique.
The entire project developed from an in-depth study of the novel, starting with a design brief and a mood map that summarize and outline all the concepts present and scope of the project.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is an articulate and lively story. A journey in the journey. It tackles the problem of the relationship between the creator and his creature, good and evil, positive and negative, and finally normality and degeneration. It recalls many elements in itself through a game of metaphors and metamorphoses. This story represents a challenge to the limit of reason and knowledge, awakening the fear of what is unknown. The creature is, therefore, the victim of prejudice because of its disquieting physical appearance, the perception of the difference then as monstrous, and as not deserving of respect and love. The loneliness that the creature denounces, then makes us reflect on the disorientation of humanity. Victor Frankenstein and his creature, in the end, almost seem to be two different sides of the same coin.
The typographic and graphics/ illustration choices want, therefore, to guide the reader through the story and the journey. But also and above all, my design wants to give the idea of creation and metamorphosis, thus emphasizing the concept of elements through simple shapes, like a continuous line, and a square, with the possibility of a second and more humanistic and spiritual reading by combining these elements in symbolic images.
